<p><title render="italic">Matlock</title> was a made for television legal drama set in Atlanta, Georgia, featuring Andy Griffith in the title role of Ben Matlock. Griffith, a long time resident of Manteo, North Carolina, was born and raised in Mount Airy, North Carolina. From an early age Griffith had an interest in music and the arts. After high school he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he became part of the school's "Carolina Play Makers." One of Griffith's earliest roles was in <title render="italic">The Lost Colony</title>, an outdoor symphonic drama still performed every summer on Roanoke Island. Griffith went on to star in a variety of movies, but he is best known for his television roles, first as Sheriff Andy Taylor in the <title render="italic">Andy Griffith Show</title> and then as Ben Matlock. The show aired on NBC-TV from September 1986-May 1992, then on ABC-TV from November 1992-May 1995. The show revolves around Ben Matlock, a defense attorney, who solves cases and wins almost every case he took to trial. The show is similar in format to <title render="italic">Perry Mason</title>.
</p>

<p>Throughout its nine season run, the show played host to a large number of both established and pre-fame stars. Some of the more notable guest appearances were from: Randy Travis, Dick Van Dyke, Jonathan Frakes, David Carradine, Jason Bateman, Hector Elizondo, Shaun Cassidy, Patricia Heaton, and Vivica A. Fox. The show also featured Don Knotts, Griffith's long time friend and former co-star, in a recurring role as Les Calhoun, a former client and Matlock's neighbor.</p>
