<head>Biographical Note</head>
<bioghist>
<p>Lillie Jacob Baum was born on April 6, 1868 in the Blackwater Community of Princess Ann County, Va. Her parents were Jacob Mercer Baum and her mother Anne But Smith Baum. She was educated at home and at the Norfolk College for Young Ladies. In 1892 she married her cousin, Dr. Julius Cephas Baum.</p>

<p>For the next ten years, they lived at <emph render="quoted">The Land of Promise</emph> in Princess Ann County, where Julian practiced medicine and farmed. They had three sons Julian, Alan and Edward Ossian or <emph render="quoted">Jack</emph>. In 1902, the family moved to Pine Island on the Currituck Banks so that Julian could help his father, Josephus Baum, farm his land near Grandy and on Pine Island. The elder Baum was engaged in farming, market hunting, and the operation of a hunt club. Lillie Jacob Baum Baum devoted her life to her family as a homemaker.</p>
