Welcome to the Outer Banks History Center!

The Outer Banks History Center is a regional archives and research library administered by the State Archives of North Carolina and located in Manteo, on historic Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Its holdings document the history, development and growth of the North Carolina coast.

Each year the Center responds to between 3,000 and 4,000 research requests from scholars, writers, historians, journalists, genealogists, the general public, and such national broadcast media as the History Channel, the Weather Channel, and National Public Radio. Dare County in the 1930s: Decade of Determination
Despite the Great Depression, the 1930s were times of great change in Dare County, N.C. The building of roads and bridges, improvements to national historic sites and the resourcefulness of the people created unparalleled opportunities for economic growth and set a new course for the future that would bring the region into national prominence. Mann and Midyett Family Papers Online Exhibit
The Mann and Midyett families have had a long presence in northeastern North Carolina with roots reaching back to the early 18th century. In 2008, the Outer Banks History Center acquired this collection of correspondence, birth records, receipts, land deeds, financial information, estate inventories, and ephemera that provides a valuable glimpse of life in the Federal Period (1775-1830) in coastal North Carolina by tracing several generations of one of the early pioneering families in this region.The processing of these papers and this online exhibit was made possible through a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC).
