9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., 7 days a week
Free and open to the public
"The Civil War Comes to Roanoke Island: Fishers, Fighters and Freedmen" tells the story of a how remote and sparsely populated Roanoke Island became the scene of an important battle early in the war, the part played by local residents, and the impact of military occupation through the end of the war. Letters, newspapers, artwork, and other materials from the History Center's collections present the unique views of people who experienced these events, from the local watermen and farmers, to sailors and soldiers from afar, to the thousands of blacks, both free and enslaved, who flocked to the island for protection during the Union occupation.
The exhibit is made possible by generous support from the Outer Banks Community Foundation (Frank Stick Memorial Fund), the Friends of the Outer Banks History Center, National Park Service, and Island Farm on Roanoke Island. Frank Stick & his Influence on the Outer Banks

August 13, 2011, 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Roanoke Island Festival Park Art Gallery
Free and open to the public
Sarah Downing, Outer Banks History Center assistant curator, will conduct a presentation Frank Stick and his Influence on the Outer Banks, as part of Second Saturdays. Stick began his career as an illustrator in the early 1900s after studying under the famed realistic illustrator Howard Pyle. Yet by the 1920s, he had become disillusioned with his commercial art career and tired of producing paintings of the same subjects.
Stick's love of fishing and the out-of-doors led him to North Carolina's Outer Banks. He envisioned the area as a resort destination, realizing that others would appreciate the natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and historic attractions of the area. He acquired large tracts of land and played a key role in the establishment of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Along with several other people, he donated the land for the Wright Brothers National Memorial Park. He also began developing an area that later became the town of Southern Shores.
In the 1960s, Stick painted 300 watercolors that are considered among the most true-to-life depictions of fish ever created. Stick died in 1966, and the paintings were published posthumously in the book An Artist's Catch. The Outer Banks History Center houses these illustrations and several will display on display during this presentation.
